I'm out here on my journey, trying to make the most of it

 Gong Xi Fai Choy!
So this is my first Chinese New Year in Malaysia and with my Chinese family and it was pretty interesting. So basically we woke up in the morning got ready, dressing in red, yellow or green trying to avoid black or white. Then we had lunch with the family. We had some delicious noodles and Taro mush which does not taste anything like Taro bubble tea by the way. Then after lunch we made the rounds by we visiting relatives at their homes, normally the younger of the relatives go and visit the older ones.

The first house we visited was my half families which basically means my Grandfather's first wife. I don't actually know this side of the family very well so it was a lot of smiling, shaking hands and sitting awkwardly while people pointed and spoke about me. "Ah Kee's (insert Chinese here)" I'm assuming they were saying Ah Kee's beautiful daughter.

The best part about Chinese New Year besides spending time with family is receiving Ang Pao! Wonderful red pockets with money inside. You receive them when you have not yet married. I normally get 1 or 2 at home but this year I got 22!!! BOOYAH A CHANNEL! (inside joke)
Ang Pao
After a long day of visiting we headed home to rest for a little while and to get ready to go out for dinner. My Uncle Andy brought some close friends from Sweden, a Malaysian Indian man and his cute Swedish wife. When we arrived at the restaurant it was packed with tons of Indian men frantically running around serving all the tables. We were directed upstairs where there were more tables and less people. Before I could put my stuff down and sit there was a huge banana leaf sitting in front of me with rice and veggies. Then they brought over 3 different kinds of curries which they passed from table to table. I believe that there was a Chicken Curry, a Fish Curry and Dahl. Then they passed around fried fish, chicken, calamari, and prawns. I was told that it is customary to eat with your hands and since I am not a women of western sophistication so I got right in there.
During our delicious dinner there was a huge crashing of cutlery which was a result of two of the servers getting into a fight. I think one of them threw the cutlery at the other. It was a very tense moment while about 7 Indian waiters were yelling trying to sort the two fighting waiters out. It seemed very serious but it was pretty funny. Especially since there was a note in the washroom warning us about how their staff is young and rather new and to please be patient with them.

KLCC (Twin Towers)
After dinner we headed downtown to see the KLCC buildings at night. These buildings were once the tallest buildings in the world but have now been out talled by buildings in Taipei and Dubai. Regardless they are still very beautiful at night.

So this brings the first day of Chinese New Years to an end. So until tomorrow

From Malaysia with love

Karin
